Greek Educational Drama Summer School 2019
We are happy to announce that the “Greek Educational Drama Summer School" is successfully completed. All participating students had an immersive experience into ancient Greek drama, music and culture.
It was a great honor to be accompanied by Professor Maria Mikedaki (University of Peloponnese) to the archeological sites of ancient Mycenae, the theaters of Argos and Epidaurus and the Asclepeion. All the visits aided for the students to understand the everyday life in Greece, in ancient times. Tombs, gates with immense walls, secret paths in the mountains, the coin toss in the center of the theatre and the comprehension of healing techniques and remedies prepared everyone to better apprehend our past and helped them to unfold the knowledge and use at the theater play that was presented to the audience during the last day of the school.
Director Anna Tsichli (University of Peloponnese) made possible, within a small period of time, to guide students to “incarnate” the main characters of the Aristophanian comedy “Birds” (Ornithes). The interpretation of the play had also additional elements that were improvised during the rehearsals. One day before the performance the students were so excited that started to promote the play distributing posters all over the city of Nafplio. The play took place at “Trianon” theatre of Nafplio and was applauded by locals, students of theatre studies and tourists. Finally, in order for the students to have a better understanding of the ancient Greek drama, the whole team visited Epidaurus theatre in order to watch the Aristophanian “Clouds” (Nefeles) (directed by Dimitris Karatzas, with Giorgos Gallos and Kariofilia Karampeti as its’ main characters).
The Summer School was organized by “Study in Greece”, “Meet Culture” and the Department of Theatrical Studies of the University of Peloponnese. It also had the support of DOPPAT of the municipality of Nafplio, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Argolida, local sites and press.
